  • Students will critically evaluate radiographic images.

Program Details

The Radiologic Technology program is an intensive 6 semester program in which graduates will earn an Associate in Applied Science degree. The program contains 2 main components: clinical education and didactic instruction. The clinical education component prepares students for a career as a Radiologic Technologist by providing real world application of the theoretical principles of radiography, patient care, procedures, and radiation protection to practical experience. Students will have the status of learners and will not replace members of the affiliated staff.

The didactic component requires students to have good study skills and the ability to think critically. Our curriculum is based on the American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ASRT) Curriculum Guide.
All courses are sequenced and may have pre-requisites. There is no fast track option for this program. Upon completion of the 24-month program, graduates are awarded an A.A.S. Degree from Central Virginia Community College and may be eligible to take the
nationally recognized certification exam administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). Eligibility depends upon meeting the ARRT ethics requirements.

Students can expect to be on campus or in the clinical facilities 5 days a week each semester. The program requires a full-time commitment from students and is best suited for those who are highly motivated, active learners. The program will educate students in the varied aspects of becoming a qualified medical imaging professional, including such areas as technical skills, patient care considerations, communication, medical knowledge, and appropriate professional work habits.

ARRT Ethics Page

Note: Students who are accepted into the program will be asked to provide a negative drug screen test and provide a Virginia State Police Background check. Students in the program are held to the same ethical standards as those working in the field. For further information regarding ethics, please visit the ARRT ethics requirements page.

Individuals who have a felony or misdemeanor conviction may not be allowed to take the national certification exam. This decision is made by The American Registry of Radiologic Technologies (ARRT) ethics committee. For questions regarding this issue, call the ARRT at (651) 687-0048 or visit their website at www.arrt.org

Our History

Established as a degree program in 1968, the CVCC Radiologic Technology Program is fully accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology.  Over 700 students have graduated from the program, providing highly qualified radiologic technologists to health care facilities throughout Virginia and surrounding states.

Graduate Opportunities

Potential Employment Opportunities

Employment opportunities as a graduate (after passing the ARRT Certification examination) are available in a variety of settings in both rural and urban areas include:

  • More generalized practice in medium to small hospitals
  • Specialized clinical practice in large academic medical hospitals and trauma centers
  • Clinics and free-standing imaging centers which may offer both special and general practice opportunities
  • Private medical practices which may offer radiography
  • Clinical practice coupled with expanded responsibilities in quality control, education, data management, and supervision, particularly in large hospitals.

In addition, graduates seeking to learn a new modality (such as CT Scan or MRI) after program completion and passage of the ARRT Certification Examination may wish to explore these options in community colleges close to our area. Below, you will find links to the programs at Virginia Western Community College as well as Piedmont Va Community College.

We are also proud to partner with several four-year institutions to offer opportunities for our graduates to further their education in radiologic technology after leaving CVCC. Information is provided below and additional information may be obtained from either the CVCC advising center or the respective four-year institution.

Graduates interested in modality training upon graduation from our program should review the following opportunities offered at community colleges in Charlottesville and Roanoke. Questions regarding the programs should be directed to the respective colleges.
