Students and faculty in the HEO classroom

Central Virginia Community College (CVCC) is proud to announce the launch of its new Heavy Equipment Operator (HEO) program, designed to meet the rising demand for skilled operators in the construction and earthmoving industries. This comprehensive program equips students with the essential skills and certifications needed to excel as heavy equipment operators, addressing the growing need for qualified professionals in the field.

CVCC's Heavy Equipment Operator program offers two levels of training that prepare students for a range of roles in the workforce. The program focuses on equipping students with the practical skills and knowledge necessary for operating various types of heavy machinery, such as excavators, wheel loaders, and utility tractors. Students will gain expertise in equipment safety, earthmoving techniques, interpreting civil drawings, and using industry-standard technology. Graduates will be prepared to enter the workforce with hands-on experience and will be eligible to earn nationally recognized credentials from the National Center for Construction Education & Research (NCCER).

The program uses state-of-the-art simulators that replicate real-life operating scenarios through motion platforms and high-resolution 3D displays. These simulators allow students to gain experience with excavator and wheel loader equipment in a safe and controlled environment.

"We’re excited to launch this program at a time when skilled heavy equipment operators are more in demand than ever," said Jason Ferguson, CVCC's associate vice president of workforce development. "Our goal is to provide students with the practical training and industry certifications that will open doors to high-demand, high-paying jobs in the construction and earthmoving sectors."

The Heavy Equipment Operator program at CVCC reflects the institution’s ongoing commitment to offering relevant, high-quality training that meets the needs of both students and local employers. By providing this program, CVCC supports workforce development and contributes to the economic growth of the region.

Enrollment for the Heavy Equipment Operator program is now open. Interested individuals are encouraged to visit the CVCC website at www.centralvirginia.edu or contact the admissions office for more information.
